Richard 'Red' A. Whitney

Richard A. “Red” Whitney, Sr., age 83 of Holbrook, passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 29, 2021. Mr. Whitney was a longtime resident of Holbrook. Born in 1938 in Arlington, he lived in Somerville prior to moving to Milton. He was a graduate of Milton High School “Wiz Kid’s class of '57” and was mostly known as “Red”.

He served in the U. S. Air Force, Veteran of the 102nd Tactical Fighter Wing, activated by JFK during the Berlin wall Crisis. Mr. Whitney was an employee for 40 plus years of New England Telephone/Verizon.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Jean Whitney of Holbrook. Brother of Dorothy Whitney of Milton. Father to Jean Griffin and her husband Darren Griffin of Somerville, Richard A. Whitney Jr. and his wife Vanisa of Plymouth, Francis Whitney and his wife Shelly of Holbrook. Preceded in death by his parents Francis and Elizabeth and his brothers Frank and Donald.

Long time Elks and American Legion Member. Known as “Bampy” in his later years with the arrival of his grandchildren Daniel, Josephine, Thomas, & Dorothy.

Above all things he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Hearing tales of his grandchildren's adventures was the highlight of his days.

Funeral from the Hurley Funeral Home, 127 So. Franklin St. (Rt. 37), Holbrook, on Friday, September 3rd at 11:15am followed by a funeral mass at St. Joseph Church in Holbrook at 12pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, September 2nd from 5-8pm. Interment at a later date.
